Ashby Show Their Class
The improvement in the Ashby 2nd team squad between this season and last season was again on show last weekend. The team have 7pts more than last season with 8 games still left to play. The first half against Grantham saw the side create lots of chances via outstanding teamwork with movement and pace of passing being the real strengths. Ashby went into the break 2-0 with Tom Fitch netting both but it could have easily been 6 or 7. Grantham only managed to get out of their half and one occasion and never looked liked troubling the solid Ashby back line.
Captain, Steve Harris, has often seen his side not start the second half too well and this was repeated. Some players lost their focus and rather than play a passing and moving game opted to dribble too often and this made it easy for the Grantham defence. Grantham executed a sound plan to sit back and narrow the play meaning Ashby players made no in-roads. Harris had asked for width, height, speed of pass and movement off the ball. He wanted Grantham to be pulled out of position to create the gaps but Ashby were simply not able to implement this. The game finished at 2-0 and the team came in for some just critisism at the end because the team did not execute the game plan.
